‘My philosophy is simple: Do the right thing’
In response to Jody Stahancyk’s May 8 letter to the editor, I would normally let this go. However, she raised issues that give me the opportunity to demonstrate who I am and how I make decisions.
Regarding her claim that I do not listen, my record speaks for itself. You do not become the human resources executive of a Fortune 10 company overseeing 150,000 employees, serve on major nonprofit boards, and organize community forums without listening to people and valuing input.
My concern with the college presidential selection process was never personal. It was about the process itself. I stood up for what I believed was not the agreed-upon process and criteria. At the end of the day, I have to look in the mirror and know I did what I believed was right, regardless of who it may offend.
That is how I would serve as county commissioner: Gather input from the community and experts, work collaboratively with staff, consider unintended consequences, and then make the decision I believe is right.
Once Jarrod Hogue was hired, I had two choices: withdrawing or engaging. I chose to engage and support him and the college. I chose support because the college is too important to our community and long-term economic vitality.
Since then, we have worked together on welding and maritime programs, hospital partnerships, remote learning opportunities, and future projects benefiting the Marine and Environmental Research and Training Station (MERTS) campus and community.
My philosophy is simple: do the right thing. If you are wrong, admit it and work to fix it.
Mike Brosius
