Keep insults, negativity out of local politics

I am responding to the February 26th article: Another candidate vies for county’s District

3:

I did not like the tenor of the interview, which started with candidate Mitra Vazeen disparaging an opponent, saying he’s “not qualified.” That’s an assessment to be made by voters, based on the vision each candidate puts forward, along with their track record of accomplishments and ability to form successful working relationships. I don’t think the attitude Vazeen displayed portends well for her capacity to collaborate with others.

The voters will decide if they prefer to fill the Clatsop County Board of Commissioners position with Vazeen, a retired teacher/educational administrator, or Mike Brosius, a retired corporate executive with extensive, local non-profit experience. I feel we are fortunate to have in Brosius a candidate who offers experience managing sizeable teams, projects, and budgets with an enterprising spirit.

Vazeen was appointed to the Clatsop Community College Board. She retained that seat by winning a race last year against a student (3990 vs. 3348 votes), not against a seasoned professional. I’m not convinced that gives her all that much experience with elected office, nor does it suggest strong endorsement of her tenure on the CCC Board.

I don’t want to see the insults and negativity of our current national politics come into local races. We can do better. Anyone who wants my vote for a position of leadership in our community needs to lead with respect and civility.
